Prostate Diseases and Treatments


Prostatitis is the inflammation or infection of the prostate gland. This condition is not contagious. Most cases are treated successfully with antibiotics.

Signs and symptoms include:

  • Trouble urinating
  • A painful or burning feeling when urinating
  • Strong, frequent urge to urinate
  • Chills and high fever
  • Lower back pain
  • Pain low in the belly or groin area
  • Rectal pressure or pain
  • Urethral discharge with bowel movements
  • Sexual problems and loss of sex drive

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, or BPH, is the enlargement of the prostate. This condition affects most men as they get older. BPH symptoms usually begin after the age of 50. BPH is not a cancer, though symptoms are very similar.

Signs and symptoms include:

  • Trouble starting a urine stream
  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Feeling the bladder has not emptied completely
  • A strong, sudden urge to urinate
  • Slow urine stream
  • Stopping and starting again several times while urinating

At worst, BPH can lead to:

  • The backflow of urine causing bladder or kidney infections
  • A complete block of urine flow
  • Kidney failure
